Perception runs on an expected schedule, and information that arrives ahead of the mental model can be as disruptive as information that arrives late. Our internal simulation of an action imitates the timing of the real one: imagined and physical events match closely at the scale of a few seconds; for longer durations, the mind chunks actions into a handful of steps. Matching a system’s timing to what the task should feel like is a design variable, not a performance constraint.
